DNV GL surveyors have carried out the classification society’s first offshore drone survey on the semisubmersible vessel Safe Scandinavia in the North Sea. This 25,383 GT tender support vessel (TSV) is owned and operated by Prosafe, supporting Statoil’s drilling operations off the coast of Norway. Using camera-equipped drones, DNV GL’s drone pilots checked the TSV’s fairleads and their connection with the vessel’s two columns as part of the intermediate survey.

SGS Minerals Services has tested the collision-tolerant flying robot designed by Flyability SA for the vessel’s hold inspections. The trial demonstrated that the collision-resilient robot can fly into the hold on board the vessel and can operate on the vessel with running engines - the vessel was under loading at time of trial. The robot can fly into the spaces hardly accessible or totally inaccessible by an inspector.

After 103 years, a robotic submarine has found the wreck of Australia's first submarine. Operating from the survey vessel MV Fugro Equator, the autonomous underwater vehicle Hugin 1000 discovered the 800-ton HMAS-AE1 this week off the coast of the Duke of York Island group in Papua New Guinea. The sub was found in 300 m (980 ft) of water using an advanced side-scan sonar system in a joint exercise by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and civilian search teams. HMAS-AE1 was an E-class submarine built in England by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness starting in 1911. She was commissioned as the first submarine in the RAN in February 1914. This video shows the final capabilities of the Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) developed by the Systems, Robotics and Vision group of the University of Balearic Islands (Spain) as part of the robotic fleet of the FP7-funded MINOAS project. This vehicle is intended to be used for providing a surveyor with an overall impression of the state of the hull of a vessel under inspection. The experiments shown have been performed in the fully autonomous mode of the platform.
U.S. officials say China stole a U.S. Navy underwater drone in the South China Sea. Officials say it happened at the same moment the USNS Bowditch, a survey ship, was about to retrieve it. The Hill reports the incident happened Thursday around noon local time in international waters off the coast of the Philippines. U.S. officials told The Hill a Chinese ship was following the Bowditch and dropped a boat into the water and grabbed the drone. The Bowditch crew called the Chinese crew and asked for the drone back -- the Chinese ship confirmed they received the message, but sailed away with the drone.
